Burj al-Arab là một trong những khách sạn sang trọng nhất thế giới, nằm ở Dubai (Các tiểu Vương quốc Ảrập Thống nhất). Công trình có hình dáng đặc biệt, giống như một cánh buồm đang no gió, do KTS Tom Wright của Tập đoàn WS Atkins PLC thiết kế.

Burj Al-Arab được khởi công năm 1994. KTS Tom Wright cho biết, chủ đầu tư muốn công trình phải trở thành một biểu tượng của Dubai, tương tự như nhà hát Opera ở Sydney hay tháp Eiffel của Paris. Tư vấn cho dự án này là Atkins, một đơn vị có tiếng của Anh, còn việc xây dựng do nhà thầu Murray & Roberts của Nam Phi thực hiện.

Với độ cao 321 m, Burj Al-Arab là công trình khách sạn cao nhất thế giới. Điều đặc biệt hơn nữa là Burj al-Arab không nằm trong đất liền mà trên một hòn đảo nhân tạo ngoài biển, cách bờ 280 m. Quá trình xây dựng rất kỳ công. Để đảm bảo cho một nền móng vững chắc, người ta đã sử dụng 230 cột móng dài 40 m để đóng xuống đất. Phần đảo nhân tạo được giữ chắc không phải bởi đá tảng, mà bằng những công nghệ mới tạo ma sát giữa cát biển với bùn dọc theo chiều dài của các cột ống cọc. Các kỹ sư xây dựng cũng làm một lớp bề mặt đá lớn, với hình dạng lược, để đảm bảo phần nền móng không bị xói mòn. Đã phải mất tới 3 năm để hoàn thiện phần móng, bằng đúng thời gian để xây dựng toàn bộ tòa nhà. Công trình tiêu tốn 70.000 tấn xi măng, 9.000 tấn thép, với tổng chi phí 1,5 tỷ USD.
